It had been a long time since Katherine Piers had a proper sword duel. She used to train and spar with other members of the Knights Templar, but since she defected, she had not really had a chance to clash blades with anyone. She had been hoping for a chance to practice some more and keep herself and her blade from getting rusty, but she never expected that her opportunity would come in the way that it had.

It wasn’t even a person that she would be crossing swords with. A moving suit of armor was a strange opponent to have—and probably a problematic one, too, considering its lack of weaknesses.

Kat parried away the first swing of her enemy’s greatsword but was nearly knocked off of her feet by the sheer power behind the strike. Whatever magic was fueling its movements was giving it a lot of strength, more than she had. Whether she was the superior duelist or not might not even matter against an opponent like that.

She swiped at it and the armor blocked a few of her swings before she got through its defenses. Unfortunately, a lunge that might have pierced any other opponent didn’t work when there was no body behind that metal; her blade slid between the plates but found nothing within, no flesh to harm or enemy to maim, just emptiness. How was she supposed to beat an enemy like that?

“You are giving a good effort,” Belina taunted. “But unfortunately, it’s all futile. You stand no chance.”

“Don’t listen to her,” Thad said. “Don’t listen to any of them.”

Kat didn’t intend to let the Acolytes of Le Fay get to her. They were just trying to distract her so she made a mistake, but she wasn’t going to be beaten by an opponent that wasn’t even human. She wasn’t going to lose the duel to some magic spell.

“If you’ll excuse us, you can have fun with that. We have a staff to find.”

Belina performed the same spell again, and that purple mist once again seeped out of her hands and poured into two other nearby suits of armor. She seemed very pleased by the results, and she and her followers started to walk away into another corridor of the ruins, leaving their animated suit of armor behind to deal with Thad and Kat. They obviously thought that it would be enough to keep them back while the acolytes found the staff of Merlin.

Those other suits of armor started to slowly awaken just like the first one had. They only had a few moments before those metal warriors were raising their greatswords too and coming after them.

“Go after them!” Kat called out as she blocked another blow from the suit of armor. “You can’t let them get to the staff! The staff is the key!”

Thaddeus wasn’t an idiot; he knew what was at stake, but a reminder wasn’t a bad thing to help light a fire beneath him. He started to run in the direction that Belina
